An Interview with The Queen of the Ball
The Queen of the Ball is the brainstorm of owner, Ms M. Hill, a world-renowned wig master with over 25 years experience as a cosmetologist - master hairstylist, expert hair cutter and colorist. Her passion now lies in creating beautiful custom-styled wigs, which are highly sought after by entertainers, stage and theatre performers worldwide. Nothing gets her creative passion going more than the challenge of designing a new style on a wig. She specializes in big hair fantasy up dos which is close to a lost art! There are only a few of us still around that know how to pull off a beautifully coiffed up do with curls and a French twist ... pinned to last and stay put on a live client or wig. You just never get the opportunity to be this creative on regular clients especially with the today's hair styles. Styling wigs is my creative passion ... it is right up there with glass blowing, another art form she loves, but has little time for now.
She owned a couple salons in the late 70s and early 90s and ventured into the travel industry for several years, another passion. She says, "After traveling the world ... little did I know I would have the opportunity to do what I always loved again ..."create beautiful hairdos inspired by her love of creative hairstyling". When asked how she learned to style wigs and create such beautiful hairstyles ... she replies ... "we are not going to talk about how old I am - but I grew up when hair was beautifully and perfectly (coiffed) and styled so high it hit the headliners in our cars!" We were called the "Hair Girls" in high school. While in cosmetology school in the 70's I learned to style hair with tons of movement, wave, and style ... and was taught competition hairstyling and the art of creating beautiful perfectly coiffed hair, which I practiced for years until the styles changed. I loved doing hair so much I entered and won a couple of hairstyling competitions back in the day.
I asked her about the comment above from Mikala Kay and she said, "I have not yet met Mikala, but when I received this comment from her in an email, I was so thrilled ... I called my best girlfriends and told them what she said and that I think I still have it goin on with hair ... you know the Hair Girl thing!" We all had a good chat and I even tried to get some of my old "Hair Girls" to come and help me style wigs, I am so busy! "You see you couldn't get a better compliment about hairstyling or wig styling ... drag queens care as much about beautiful hair as they do their gowns and makeup, more than many women today! Styling hair or wigs the way she can ... is almost a lost art form ... there are very few of us around. After trying for a couple of months to teach a few hairstylists her styling techniques ... she realized how hard it was to style wigs like she does. So she decided she better try to pass it on to others before she joins the old "Hair Girls" up above. She said you either have the creative ability and can learn the skills or your don't and you find out quickly if you have what it takes. It doesn't matter if you have been cutting and blow drying hair for 1 year or 20 years, the hairstyles of the past twenty-five years and what is taught in cosmetology schools does not provide them with the skill set to style wigs. If you do not have ability to put in a good base - back combing or teasing the hair, nimble fingers, a light touch to style, and most importantly the creative eye to envision a beautifully coiffed hairstyle (with few hairs out of place) and execute it ... then her kind of wig styling is not for the average stylist. It requires skill, artistic ability and patience to learn to style wigs expertly.
Her ability to create styles from the 1940s to present day after looking at a photo and years of hairstyling experience is an advantage of course. Seeing hairstylists with 1 to 20 years of experience not be able to create a beautiful coiffed hairstyle without struggling for months lead her to start offering wig styling classes so she can share her knowledge and pass on her skills.
